Vazgen Ghazaryan

Vazgen Ghazaryan was born in Yerevan, Armenia. He studied singing and percussion at the State Conservatory of Yerevan from 1997 to 2005. During his studies he became soloist at the opera studio of the State Conservatory. He was a member of the Radio and Television Chamber Choir of Armenia from 1999-2002 and soloist of the St. Zoravor church. In 2004, Vazgen Ghazaryan was winner of the regional singing competition in Yerevan. In 2008 he was a semifinalist at the International Belvedere Competition in Vienna. He won the Eleanor McCollum Competition of the Houston Grand Opera in 2008. In 2010, he was awarded the  Aurio Tomicich Prize as best bass at the Viotti Competition in Italy.

Vazgen Ghazaryan gave his opera debut in 2004/05 with Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia) at the  opera studio of the State Conservatory of Yerevan under the baton of Hovhannes Mirzoyan. Since 2005, he is soloist at the State Opera of Armenia.

In 2006, he interpreted Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte) at the State Opera of Armenia, a part he also performed at the Stresa Festival and at the Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova under the baton of Ricardo Frizza. In the same year, he sang at the Teatro Nacional de Sao Carlos Lissabon the 6th door keeper, 2nd policeman and 2nd son of the dame in Schostakowitsch’s The Nose.

In 2007, Vazgen Ghazaryan sang Bertran in Tschaikovsky’s Iolantha and Zaccaria (Nabucco) at the State Opera of Armenia. In the autumn of 2008 he guested as Sam (Un ballo in maschera) at Oper Bonn. Vazgen Ghazaryan appeared as Vodnik in Dvorak’s Rusalka at the Mikhailovski Theater in St. Petersburg. In 2008 he sang in Glass’ Waiting for the Barbarians at Barbican Hall London under the baton of Dennis Russell Davis and Ramphis in  Aida at the Opera Classica Festival, where he had already appeared as Zaccaria in Nabucco one year before. At the Stresa Festival (under Gianandrea Noseda) as well as at the Teatro Carlo Felice Genua (under Riccardo Frizza) he could be heard as Sarastro (The Magic Flute) in 2006. Other guest appearances led him to Theater Chemnitz (Capitano in Manon Lescaut) and to the theatre of Craiova (Ramphis in Aida).

Since 2007/08, Vazgen Ghazaryan is a member of the ensemble at the Theater Erfurt. There, he sang Don Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia), the Doctor (La Traviata), Sagrestano (Tosca), Herr Reich (The Merry Wives of Windsor), Surin (The Queen of Spades), Crespel (Les Contes d’Hoffmann), Titurel (Parsifal), Le Bailli (Werther), Mercante Fenicio (Fedra), Sagrestano (Tosca), and Sam in a new production of Un ballo in maschera, staged by Johannes Kresnik.

In May 2009, Erfurt offered him the title role in Arrigo Boito’s Mefistofele. In October 2009 he guested as The Watersprite (Rusalka) at the Michailovsky-Theater in St. Petersburg. In 2009/10 he sang a.o. Banquo (Macbeth) next to George Gagnidze as Macbeth and Bartolo (Le nozze di Figaro), followed, in 2010/11 by Colline (La Bohème) at the Theater Erfurt.

In November 2010, he interpreted the role of Hunding (Die Walküre) in Moscow with the National Orchestra of Russia, conducted by Kent Nagano. In June 2011 he guested as Pagano (I Lombardi alla prima crociata) in St. Gallen.

Plans for 2011/12 in Erfurt include Bertram (Robert le Diable), Zaccaria (Nabucco), Publio (Titus), Eremit (Der Freischütz) and Pagano (I Lombardi).

Concert engagements of Vazgen Ghazaryan include Mozart’s Requiem at the Armenian Philharmonic Hall, Verdi’s Requiem and Haendel’s Messiah at the Domstufen-Festival in Erfurt.
