Evgenia Grekova

Russian soprano Evgenia Grekova was born in Kurgan. She studied singing in Moscow with Prof. V. Alexandrova and continued her studies in Karlsruhe with Prof. M. Shirai and Hartmut Höll. Furthermore, she attended master classes with great singers, such as Edith Mathis, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Marilyn Horne.

Evgenia Grekova is an award holder of several International Competitions: R.Schumann Competition (Zwickau); Fr. Schubert & Musik der Moderne (Graz, 2001); Fr. Vinas Competition (Barcelona, 2004); Musikzauber Franken Liedwettbewerb (Director S. Jerusalem, Ansbach, 2004); Mozart & Belcanto Competition (Passau, 2005); Citta di Alcamo (Director V. Zeani, Sicily, 2005); Stenhammar Competition (Director K. Meyer, Sweden, 2006); Mozart Competition (Salzburg, 2006). Also in 2006, she returned as a winner with five prizes from the „Unisa Voice Competition“ held in Pretoria, South Africa in 2006 (Director G. Bumbry); Grand Prix at the "Concours Musical International de Montreal"(Canada, Mai 2007); Concorso Lirico Internationale del Mediterraneo - II. Preis (2008).

Evgenia Grekova was hired by the Staatstheater Stuttgart for several parts in Maurice Ravel’s L’enfant et les sortilèges while she was still a student.

From 2001 to 2005 Evgenia Grekova was a member of the ensemble of Staatstheater Nürnberg. There she interpreted many parts such as Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), Zerlina (Don Giovanni), Ilia (Idomeneo), Sophie (Werther and Der Rosenkavalier), Frasquita (Carmen), Olympia (Les Contes d’Hoffmann) and Jungfer Anna (Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor). She also performed at the Rheingau, Richard-Strauss and Bayreuth festivals. In the year 2002, she sang Waldvogel (Siegfried) and Young Shepherd (Tannhäuser) in Bayreuth to great critical acclaim. The Neue Zürcher Zeitung called her “the vocal event of the evening.”

Evgenia Grekova made many guest appearances, most notably at the Wiener Staatsoper (Waldvogel in Siegfried), Semperoper Dresden (Zerlina in Don Giovanni), Monaco (Marguerite in La Damnation de Faust in concert version), Theater Erfurt (Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier), Nationaltheater Mannheim (Giannetta in L’elisir d’amore and Diana in Orpheus en Enfers), Staatstheater Cottbus (Die Gänsemagd in Engelbert Humperdinck’s Die Königskinder), Gstaad (Lied recital), Nantes and Angers (both Olympia in Les Contes d’Hoffmann), China and Russia.

During the 2005/06 season, Evgenia Grekova's most notable appearances include the part of Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), Konstanze (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), as well as Elena in Nino Rota’s Il cappello di paglia di Firenze at Opernhaus Halle. 

During the 2006/07 season, she gave her role- and house debut as Micaela (Carmen) at the Wuppertaler Bühnen. In May 2007 she guested as Despina (Così fan tutte) at the Staatsoper Stuttgart.

Since 2008/09 Evgenia Grekova is a member of Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden. There she sang, a.o. Zerlina (Don Giovanni), Pamina (The Magic Flute), Primadonna (Viva la mamma) and Euridice (Orfeo ed Euridice). In the season 2010/11 she sang, a.o., Adele (Die Fledermaus), Drusilla (L’incoronazione di Poppea), Nanetta (Falstaff) and 2nd Maid (Elektra) in Wiesbaden. In the season 2011/12 she will be singing there also Marzelline (Fidelio) and Liù (Turandot).

In 2009/2010 Evgenia Grekova guested, a.o., as Frasquita (Carmen) at Staatstheater Mainz, as Pamina at Nationaltheater Weimar and as Soeur Constance (Le dialogue des Carmélites) in Basel.

Evgenia Grekova has worked with the following conductors: Christian Thielemann, Antonio Pappano, Adam Fischer, Philippe Auguin, Hartmut Rilling and, at a Lied recital, with Wolfgang Sawallisch.

As a recitalist she is often invited to sing concerts in Germany and abroad. The Garmisch-Partenkirchner Tageblatt wrote about her Liederabend at the Richard Strauss Tagen: “Evgenia Grekova sang: a voice full of discipline, lightness, power, richness, balance, dynamic range and register euqlization proves that an important singer has come that will make her way in Lied and Opera."
