Deborah Mayer

In April 2009 German/American soprano, Deborah Mayer gaver her Parisian debut singing the role of Ada in Richard Wagner’s opera Die Feen at the Theatre du Chatelet, under the musical direction of Maestro Marc Minkowski and with acclaimed stage director Emilio Sagi. The role of Ada in Die Feen was also her Wagnerian debut with the Mainfranken Theater Würzburg in Germany. This performance of Richard Wagner’s first and rarely performed opera was directed by Christian Poeppelreiter as part of the 200th Anniversary celebration for the theater. Wolfgang Wagner, the grandson of Richard Wagner, was among the many prominent guests in attendance at the premiere. Ms Mayer just returned from South Korea where she sang Richard Wagner’s Wesendonk Lieder with the Daejeon Philharmonic in Daejeon and at the Seoul Arts Center in Seoul, Korea. The last concert was broadcast on national television in Korea on the Arirang Network.

Recent seasons include Donna Anna in Don Giovanni at the Landestheater Salzburg., Abigaille in Nabuccco with the Mainfranken Theater Wuerzburg and Donna Anna in Don Giovanni and Elettra in Idomeneo as part of the Mozart Festival with the Mainfranktheater Würzburg (conductor Daniel Klajner) . She has also performed the role of Leonora in Il Trovatore opposite tenor Chris Merrit with the Baltimore Opera (conductor Christian Badea) as well as with the Syracuse Opera, the title role in Aida with Opera Roanoke, the title role in Tosca with the Opera Theater of Connecticut, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni with Indiana Opera North, and Flora in Tito Cappobianco’s production of La Traviata with the Palm Beach Opera  (conductor Anton Guadagno).

Her European concert debut was as Soprano Soloist in Verdi’s Messa di Requiem with the Philharmonia Orchestra London as part of the closing concert for England’s Chichester Festival. Ms. Mayer also sang Verdi’s Messa di Requiem in Würzburg. In the spring of 2007 she was the soprano soloist in the Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with the Wuerzburg Philharmonic Orchestra (cond: Daniel Klajner) in a concert to mark the 60th Anniversary of World War II. Ms. Mayer has performed in concert with such orchestras as The Philharmonia Orchestra London, The Italian Philharmonic in Ascona, Switzerland, The Palm Beach Opera Orchestra, and the South Bend Symphony. Her other concert repertoire includes the Rossini Stabat Mater and Haendel’s Messiah.

Equally at home in modern repertoire, she created the role of Victoria Woodhull in the world premiere of the opera Mrs. Satan, written by Victoria Bond, at the Guild Hall in East Hampton NY, and she recently sang the role of Marta Marnis in Limonen aus Sizilien composed by Manfred Tojahn with the Mainfranken Theater Würzburg. The composer himself also directed this newly renovated version of the opera for the stage.

Also an accomplished recitalist, Ms. Mayer was invited by the Richard Wagner Society of Bayreuth to give a recital in Bayreuth after being the first German/American to be awarded a stipendium from the Richard Wagner Society of Bayreuth for the year 2000. She also sang Richard Wagner’s Wesendonk Lieder in 2007 for the American Wagner Society in Chicago, IL and Wesendonk Lieder for the Richard Wagner Society of Northern California in San Francisco, CA.

Ms. Mayer won a fellowship from the Ezio Pinza Council for American Singers of Opera, was a two-time winner in the Palm Beach Opera Awards, once in the Junior Category and once in the Senior Category, and won top prize in the National Opera Association Awards in Chicago. She began her vocal studies at Indiana University with the late Nicola Rossi-Lemeni, Virginia Zeani, and KS James King, and continued in New York City with Metropolitan Opera Mezzo Mignon Dunn. Presently she studies with Soprano Cheryl Studer.
