Dan Chamandy

Canadian tenor Dan Chamandy, resides in Innsbruck, Austria where he was a member of the Tiroler Landestheater until the end of the season 2005/06. In the season 2004/05 he sang there Der Kaiser/Jüngling in Strauss’ Die Frau ohne Schatten, Edwin in Kálmán’s Die Csárdásfürstin, Luzio in Wagner’s Das Liebesverbot, Le Duc in Massenet’s Chérubin, and Sergei in Schostakovitch’s Lady Macbeth von Mzensk. In previous seasons, he sang the lead roles in Fidelio, Carmen, Lady Macbeth von Mzensk, Macbeth, Werther, Otello, Turandot, Die Zauberflöte, Der Rosenkavalier, Faust, Così fan tutte, L’Elisir d’amore, Was Ihr Wollt, Neues vom Tage, and more as well as in the operettas Das Land des Lächelns, Der Graf von Luxemburg, Die lustigen Nibelungen, Die Fledermaus, Orpheus in der Unterwelt, Ba-Ta-Clan and more.

 

In 1999, Dan Chamandy was a finalist and winner at the renowned Belvedere Competition in Vienna. In the 98/99 season he performed a 10 month European tour as Sou-Chong in Das Land des Lächelns with the Hoofdstad Operette, Amsterdam. He made his debut with De Nederlandse Opera in Pique Dame, and with Vara Radio in their production of Norma, and in Turandot at the Staatstheater Stuttgart. He also performed Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos for Pacific Opera, Victoria, Canada.

 

An alumnus of the prestigious Canadian Opera Company’s Ensemble Studio, lyric tenor Dan Chamandy appeared in mainstage productions of Ariadne auf Naxos, Rigoletto, Turandot, and was also featured as the Prince in the tour production of Cinderella. During the 1997/98 season he was heard as Harlequin in the acclaimed Canadian Opera Company (COC) production of Ullman’s rarely performed The Emperor of Atlantis and at the Ford Centre with the COC Orchestra in L’Enfance du Christ. Opera Lyra Ottawa engaged his services for the title role in the new opera, Gianni and he returned to the nation’s capitol for Camille in a gala performance of Die lustige Witwe at the National Arts Centre.

He made his American operatic debut as Nemorino (L’elisir d’amore) for Skylight Opera Theatre of Milwaukee. He also appeared as Satarino and Mercurio in Cavalli’s La Calisto for the Canadian Opera Company and debuted for Opera Mississauga as Ferrando (Così fan tutte). Ramiro in Rossini’s La Cenerentola for the Calgary Opera tour, Vancouver Opera audiences heard him for the first time as Remendado in Carmen.

In the season 2006/07 Dan Chamandy returned as a guest to Innsbruck for Fledermaus (Alfred). The next year he sang there Herod (Salome) and Erik (The Flying Dutchman).

In the last two seasons he sang, a.o., Anatol in Barber’s Vanessa and Chlestakow in Egk’s Der Revisor, both in Giessen, Don José (Carmen) in Hildesheim, Romboidal/Fé-Ni-han in Offenbachs L'ile de Tulipatan/Ba-ta-clan in Vienna, and again Paul in Korngold’s Die Tote Stadt in Passau.
 
In the season 2010/2011 he will be back in Giessen as Bürgermeister in Der Besuch der Alten Dame, Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus in Holland (on tour) and Tamino in The Magic Flute with the Kinderoper Papageno (Austria/Germany tour).

When not busy on the opera stage, Mr. Chamandy has appeared with the Victoria Symphony, the Nederlands Promenade Orkest, the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Holland, the Aldeburgh Connection of Toronto, Symphony Nova Scotia, the Orpheus and Tallis choirs of Toronto, Bel’Arte singers and the Dalhousie Chorale in works by Beethoven, Bach, Duruflé, Bruckner, Handel, Mendelssohn, and Haydn. On the summer circuit, he was featured in many festivals throughout the Netherlands, and by Quinte Summer Music.
