Andrea Lang was born in St. Gallen, Switzerland. She was 15 years old when she gave her debut in her hometown as First Boy (Die Zauberflöte), followed shortly by impersonations of by Siss (Albert Herring), Barbarina (Le nozze di Figaro) and L’apparizione (Macbeth).
Andrea Lang's first singing teacher in St. Gallen was Stefanie May-Nyffelerleft. In 1995 she moved to Berlin to continue her musical education with Prof. Ingrid Figur at the Conservatory of Arts. Conservatory productions cast her in the roles of Pamina (Die Zauberflöte) and Euridice (Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice). She graduated from the Conservatory in 1999 with distinction.
Andrea Lang took masterclasses at the Ravinia Festival Chicago with Peter Schreier, Thomas Allen, Frederica von Stade, Rudolf Piernay, Roger Vignoles and others, at the international Bach-academy Stuttgart with Ingrid Figur, Klesie Kelly and Helmuth Rilling and at the International Summer Academy Mozarteum in Salzburg with Prof. Rudolf Knoll. She also studied the interpretation of 20th century Lied with Axel Bauni and Prof. Aribert Reimann.
Andrea Lang was awarded Scolarships from Migros and the Ernst Göhner Trust Zürich as well as from the Ria and Arthur Dietschweiler Trust St. Gallen. In 1999, she won the Third Prize at the international Paula Lindberg-Salomon Lied contest in Berlin. She was one of the few participants to take part in the Placido Domingo World Opera contest Operalia 2003.
From 2000 to 2003, Andrea Lang was a member of the ensemble at the Landestheater Linz in Austria, where she sang many important lyric roles, such as Norina (Don Pasquale), Sophie (Der Rosenkavalier), Despina (Cosi fan tutte), Ännchen (Der Freischütz), Adina (L’Elisir d’amore), Valencienne (Die lustige Witwe), Anna (Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor) and others.
In December 2001 Andrea Lang gave her debut at the Grosses Festspielhaus Bregenz and enjoyed enormous success and critical acclaim as Gretel in a new production of Humperdinck's Hänsel und Gretel.
A great part of her artistic work is dedicated to the Lied and concert repertoire. She sang Bach cantatas under the baton of Helmuth Rilling. She also interpreted a large number of Bach passions and oratorios, such as the St Matthew Passion at the Brucknerhaus Linz under the baton of Dennis Russel Davies and the Christmas Oratorio in the Berlin Philharmonia. Masses by Mozart and Schubert, Mozart's Requiem, Haydn’s The Creation and The Seasons and a songs by Beethoven, Berg, Brahms, Debussy, Fauré, Mahler, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Rachmaninow, Reimann, Schreker, Schubert, Schumann, R. Strauss, Ullmann, Webern, and so on, belong to her extensive repertoire.
Amongst her many appearances, Andrea Lang rates the the following as most decisive:
- in 2003, at the Autumn music days Bad Urach, as Graziella for the world premiere of Siegfried Wagner’s opera Rainulf und Adelasia;
- the new year's concert tour through Northern Italy under conductor Gustav Kuhn;
- as Marzelline in a concert production of Beethoven’s Leonore, under the baton of Dennis Russel Davies for the Brucknerfest Linz and the Vienna Konzerthaus;
- her debut as Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro in Japan, in combination with an opera and operetta gala and interpreting Beethoven’s 9th Symphony at the World Expo 2005.
- in 2006, as soloist in Mozart’s Waisenhaus Mass at the Lucerne Festival, in Haydn’s The Seasons at the Tonhalle Zurich with the Tonhalle Orchestra.
- as guest soloist for the first „St. Galler Festspiele“ in Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana.
During the 2006/2007 season, Andrea Lang was a member of the ensemble in St. Gallen, where she gave her debut as Zerlina in Don Giovanni and interpreted the part of Anna Reich in The Merry Wives of Windsor.
In July 2007, she sang Des Knaben Wunderhorn and Schubert’s Hirt auf dem Felsen at the Gustav Mahler Musikwochen in Toblach. In November 2007, she returned to St. Gallen as Franziska Cagliari (Wiener Blut), and, in 2008, with Ännchen (Der Freischütz).
In 2009, Andrea Lang cooperated with pianist Claire Pasquier to publish her first CD of Lieder entiteled «Liebesode».
