The young mezzosoprano Alice Rath was born in Vienna. She studied voice at the Conservatory of the City of Vienna with Margaret Zimmermann. She also worked with Lucia Meschwitz and Christian Pollack at the Opernschule Vienna. Currently she studies with Wicus Slabbert.
She attended master classes for Lied and oratorio with David Lutz, for operetta with Lucia Meschwitz, for Old Music with Paul Esswood, for opera with Margaret Zimmermann, for Lied with Charles Spencer and for singing with Prof. Kurt Widmer.
Alice Rath won the following voice competitions:
While still a student, Alice Rath sang in numerous distinguished choirs, such as the Konzertvereinigung Wiener Staatsopernchor at the Salzburg Festival as well as the Bayreuther Festspielchor. She also sang with the Ambassade Orchester Vienna on a concert tour in South America, the Arioso Quartett Vienna, as well as the Vokalensemble and Consort Polyhymnia Alte Universität Wien (Old University of Vienna).
In 2003 she sang, among others, 2nd Lady (The Magic Flute) in Klosterneuburg, Hänsel (Hänsel und Gretel) at the Herbsttagen Blindenmarkt and the Altes Theater Steyer as well as Ganymed (Franz von Suppé’s Die schöne Galathée) and Daphnis (Offenbach’s Daphnis und Chloe) at the Südostbayerischen Städtebundtheater Passau. She also sang at the world premiere of Wolfram Wagner’s chamber opera Endlich Schluss at the Neue Oper Wien. In 2004 she sang the role of Grazie Rebecca in the world premiere of Christoph. Coburger’s Oper Zwischenfälle at the Donaufestival in Korneuburg in a coproduction with the Neue Oper Wien, Marcellina in a production of the Jeunesse of Le nozze di Figaro as well as Lindoro in Florian Gassmann’s La Contessina at the Sommeroper in Schärding.
In 2005 she returned to Südostbayerisches Städtetheater Passau as Ruggiero in Die Zauberinsel (Handel’s Alcina for children). With the Wiener Kammeroper she sang Mascha in Shostakowitch’ Moskau, Moskau and Zulma in L’Italiana in Algeri in Klosterneuburg. In December 2005 she performed Dorabella (Così fan tutte) in Hall in Tirol.
With the beginning of the season 2006/07 Alice Rath is a member of Theater Erfurt, where she sang, a.o., Hänsel (Hänsel und Gretel), Judit in the world premiere of Andrea Lorenzo Scartazzini’s Wut, Lola (Cavalleria rusticana), Henri (Der Opernball), Flora Bervoix (La Traviata), Alisa (Lucia di Lammermoor), 2nd Elf (Rusalka) and Annina (Der Rosenkavalier).
In the season 2007/08 she added the following roles to her repertoire: Un efebo in Ildebrando Pizzetti’s Fedra, Mikalis in Leoncavallo’s La reginetta delle rose, Barbara (Eine Nacht in Venedig), Messaggera/Prosperina (Monteverdi’s L´Orfeo), Flora Bervoix (La Traviata), Isabel la Clavela in Flavio Testi’s Mariana Pineda and Brigida in Testi’s La brocca rotta. In the season 2008/09 she sings, a.o., Muse/Nicklausse (Les Contes d’Hoffmann) and Anna, the main role in the world premiere of Franz Hummel’s Der Richter und sein Henker.
In 2010 she sang a.o. Second Lady (Die Zauberflöte) at the Festival in St. Margarethen near Vienna as well as Brautjungfer (Der Freischütz) under Bertrand de Billy at Theater an der Wien. In 2011 she gave her role debut as Frau Reich (Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor) with Schlossfestspiele Zwingenberg.
