Born in Moscow, Alexei Wawiloff studied voice at the Tchaikovsky State Conservatory. While still a student he appeared at the Bolschoi Theater, participated in several radio- and television productions and won numerous competitions.
Then Alexei Wawilow continued his studies in the US with Prof. Virginia Zeani. He received a grant, Sweeny Scholarship, from the Artist Diploma Program of the Indiana University of Bloomington. He attended several master classes, among others with James King and Carlo Bergonzi.
Numerous guest contracts and concerts led the tenor to Russia, Germany, Spain, France, Canada, Mexico, China, Japan, Greece, Finland and the USA. In 1996 Alexei Wawiloff gave his German debut as Rodolfo (La Bohème) in Gera. Then he guested, among others, at Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf, Staatstheater Hannover, Komische Oper Berlin, Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar, Anhaltisches Theater Dessau, Oper Leipzig, Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater Schwerin, Opernhaus Halle, in Luxembourg and Bayreuth as well as the Moscow Bolschoi Theater, in Kentucky, Bloomington and Indianapolis.
Alexei Wawiloff’s most important parts are Don Carlo, Des Grieux (Manon Lescaut), Cavaradossi (Tosca), Rodolfo (La Bohème), Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly), Turiddu (Cavalleria Rusticana), Werther, Lensky (Eugene Onegin), Prince (Rusalka), Lohengrin as well as the title role in Zemlinsky’s Der Zwerg.
In the season 2004/05 ha sang, among others, Rodolfo (La Bohème) at Komische Oper Berlin and Grand Théatre de la Ville de Luxembourg. Furthermore he sang Don Carlo in the Verdi-Schiller-Cycle by Johannes Felsenstein at Anhaltisches Theater Dessau and gave his role debuts as Andrea Chenier and Janik (The Bartered Bride). In the season 2005/06 Alex Wawiloff sang, among others, Des Grieux (Manon Lescaut) at the Aalto-Theater Essen and Rodolfo (La Bohème) at Komischen Oper Berlin and René (Der Graf von Luxemburg) at Mecklenburgischen Staatstheater Schwerin.
In the season 2006/07 he sang, a.o., Manrico (Il Trovatore) at the Opera House of Kazan, a tour with the same role with the State Opera of Staatsoper Tatarstan, a concert at the Philharmonie Essen and in Schwerin the revival of Der Graf von Luxemburg.
Between 2008 and 2010, he returned as Lenski (Eugen Onegin) to Cagliari and guested as Lykov (The Tsar’s Bride) at the Opera House of Kazan, and Calaf (Turandot) at the Stadttheater Bremerhaven and at the Theater Kiel. He took part in a production of Schrekers Die Gezeichneten at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo.
Equally on demand on the concert stage, Alex Wawiloff recently sang at the Philharmonie Essen, Alte Oper Frankfurt, with the SWR Rundfunkorchester, with Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz under Peter Falk, with Württembergische Philharmonie under Norichika Iimori and Rossini’s Stabat Mater with Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Vjekoslav Sutej.
In Basel he replaced on short notice famous tenor Peter Seiffert in a series of concerts. The Swiss press acclaimed him as tenor hope and discovery. Alex Wawiloff interpreted Beethovens Ninth Symphony in Leipzig and toured France with the Russian Chamber Philharmonic St Peterbourg under conductor Juri Gilbo.
